Brushing tips

In between regular visits to the dentist, here is a simple routine you can follow to help decrease the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems

  • brush thoroughly twice a day and flow daily
  • eat a balanced diet and limit snacks between meals
  • use dental products that contain fluoride (including toothpaste)
  • brush for a minimum of two minutes
  • clean between your teeth using dental floss
  • after brushing, spit out any excess toothpaste. Do not rinse your mouth straight after brushing as this will wash away the concentrated fluoride in the remaining toothpaste which will reduce its preventative effects
  • using a mouthwash that contains fluoride can help prevent tooth decay but do not use mouthwash straight after brushing your teeth otherwise it will wash away the concentrated fluoride in the toothpaste left on your teeth – choose a different time to use mouthwash eg after lunch. Do not eat or drink 30 minutes after using a fluoride mouthwash. if you use a chlorhexidine mouthwash, you must leave an interval of 30 minutes after brushing before you should use this.
